Up High – Monument Valley

[from My Photo a Day Adventure blog]

Saturday, November 13, 2021 … Blame it on director, John Fordhis first Monument Valley film, Stagecoach, 1939, would have been enough … but he returned 8 times … 8 more films … color and black & white … 8 more visions of Monument Valley … The celluloid mirage became real on my first journey to the Navajo Nation, Arizona / Utah … and Monument Valley … I’ve returned 4 times

Fun with Movie Books

[from My Photo a Day Adventure blog]

June 9, 2021, Wednesday … What I’m Reading … history and movies, all in one … nice to have a stash at hand … the switch this past year, with libraries closed to in-person browsing, led to these purchases … details below

Teeny Tuxedo says … “I’ve been practicing my dance moves … How ’bout it, West Side guys? … Can I join the gang??” …

  • Saw Glenn Frankel discuss his books:
  • The Searchers: The Making of an American Legend, 2013  … one of my favorite John Ford films … set me on the trail to Monument Valley, Navajo Nation … 6 times!
  • High Noon: The Hollywood Blacklist and the Making of an American Classic, 2017 … High Noon’s not a favorite, but intrigued to see the Hollywood Blacklist connection
  • Saw Peter Fitzgerald’s documentary, West Side Stories, 1996 … great behind-the-scenes footage, interviews (both stage and film) … sadly, has been removed from you-know-where. This led me to:
  • West Side Story: The Jets, the Sharks, and the Making of a Classic, 2020, Richard Barrios, Turner Classic Movies … LOVE the soundtrack … first heard in high school English Lit class, vinyl LP record album (what a terrific teacher, Mr. Somebody, just out of college) … the only weakness of the 1961 film (10 Oscars!), Natalie Wood and Richard Beymer (Maria and Tony)

The first book I remember reading and comprehending … Black Beauty, by Anna Sewell. 1955 Whitman edition … Specifically the very first page …

Second or third grade, 1958 or ’59. At home, the Glenwood house. My very own copy.

Still have the glossy covered, battered original in my box of horse books. Bought a more pristine copy at an antique shop, probably 20 years ago.

Anna Sewell died in 1878, less than a year after Black Beauty was published.

Above, rightChapter I – My Early Home

The first place that I can well remember was a large pleasant meadow with a pond of clear water in it. Some shady trees leaned over it, and rushes and water lilies grew at the deep end …

While I was young I lived upon my mother’s milk, as I could not eat grass. In the daytime I ran by her side, and at night I lay down close by her. When it was hot, we used to stand by the pond in the shade of the trees …

Roy Rogers Riders Club

The Roy Rogers Riders Club began in 1948 … a message to kids in movie theaters …

“You know, boys and girls, the real purpose of the Riders Club is for all of us to get together and become better acquainted. Help each other, especially help prevent any and all kinds of accidents. Do that for me, will ya?

“You know, the best Roy Rogers Riders are the ones who live up to the rules on the back of your membership card.

“Well, sir, right now, Trigger and I have got a few things to take care of in Hollywood, so we’re going to turn this meeting over to the ranch foreman of our club, the manager of this theater.

“I’ll be looking for you at our meeting next week, so be sure to be here. And until then, from Trigger and me, goodbye, good luck, and may the good Lord take a likin’ to ya! See ya next week!”

A letter to the “ranch foreman” of the club … “… many more angles can be used in conducting the Club. What I have in mind is good old American ingenuity on the part of you, the Exhibitor.”

Mighty Joe

December 9, 2014 — Joe Bonomo …
joebonomo_1901-1978

joebonomo_perilsofthewild_1925_margaretquimby

“The son of a Coney Island candy maker and the winner of a Modern Apollo contest, wiry, little Joe Bonomo parlayed his physical culture fame into a lucrative film career as a stunt performer and, at Universal, star of silent serials. The grand prize in the Apollo contest was a 1,000-dollar purse and a screen role opposite celebrity/star Hope Hampton in A Light in the Dark. Joe also doubled Hampton and was well on his way to stardom in such action serials as The Great Circus Mystery, in which he prevented a plot by Hindu agents to steal an invaluable ruby, and The Chinatown Mystery (1928), as a secret service agent battling the mysterious Sphinx. Bonomo made the transition to talkies but a heavy Brooklyn accent prevented him from playing Anthony opposite Claudette Colbert’s Cleopatra (1932) and the sign was on the wall. After performing stunts and playing bit parts in such near-legendary horror films as The Murders in the Rue Morgue (1932) and Island of Lost Souls (1933), Bonomo returned to the family’s well-established salt water taffy business and later ventured into publishing, an equally thriving venture that culminated with his 1968 autobiography, The Strongman.” ~ Hans J. shirleytemple_1943_ardendairyfarm_homeof_tillie_tillamoodcalfTillie is mentioned in Shirley’s autobiography, Child Star:

“[In 1943] photographer Andre de Dienes was assigned to pose me on a haystack at the nearby Arden Dairy Farm, coincidentally the home of Tillie Temple from Tillamook, my gift cow from a distant birthday. Dressed in cowboy boots, blue jeans, blouse, and a bulky cable-knit sweater, I fluffed out my hair and stretched out in what I assumed were seductive poses most lying back in the hay sucking on a piece of straw. After a few rolls of film de Dienes complained that my outfit was shapeless, and maybe too much. Rolling my jeans to the knee, I exposed both calves. Not just what he had in mind, he said. Let’s take off the boots, for starters. Then, how about a little more off-the-shoulder with the blouse? For a third time, I rebelled. Pin-up photos were perfectly okay, particularly if the legs were like Betty Grable’s. Contrived cheesecake was for starlets, and I wanted no part of it.

Update, July 8, 2015 : Move ahead 27 years … I was a Tillamook kid, with my own Guernsey calf, Java Jive … in the Cow Catchers 4-H club …

katharinehepburn_womanoftheyear_1942_kitchen_spencertracyNovember 17, 2014 — The accomplished Katharine Hepburn (1907-2003) of Woman of the Year, 1942, finds her Achilles’ heel in the kitchen … Her culinary prowess is a shambles … as Spencer Tracy discovers …

“This recipe is from an interview Katharine Hepburn gave in 1975 to Liz Smith of The Ladies Home Journal.” …  (It was also “shared in the New York Times, by one-time neighbors of Katharine Hepburn. When they brought her a batch of brownies, she said they had too much flour and were overbaked, then proceeded to share her family’s brownie recipe. The brownies don’t have a lot of height, but are supremely moist and chewy, quite fudge-like.”)

Let’s make them … they are a cinch … put together in minutes in one saucepan and tossed in the oven….so simple.  I can even picture Katherine slamming around in the kitchen proclaiming she doesn’t have time for a more complicated recipe. ” – Noble Pig Blog …   Continue reading Kate’s Brownies

Eugene Pallette Ranch!

Wednesday, September 17, 2014, 11:55 pm — On TCM right now … the 5-minute Eugene Pallette: What a Character

A song I made up when Glynnis and I took a road trip through Northeastern Oregon:

“Eugene Pallette Ranch
Eugene Pallette Ranch
We’re going to the
Eugene Pallette Ranch!”

We used David Yeadon’s Backroad Journeys of the West Coast States as a guide … A truly great trip, with nary a crowded road … That was in the late 1980s … Wonder how much it’s changed? … Time for another road trip!
backroad_journeysofthewestcoaststates_davidyeadon_1979_cover

eugenepallette_ranch_sign_barn_wallowaproperties_790h

“In 1946, convinced that there was going to be a “world blow-up” by atom bombs, Pallette received considerable publicity when he set up a “mountain fortress” on a 3,500-acre ranch near Imnaha, Oregon, as a hideaway from universal catastrophe. The “fortress” reportedly was stocked with a sizable herd of prize cattle, enormous supplies of food, and had its own canning plant and lumber mill.

“When the “blow-up” he anticipated failed to materialize after two years, he began disposing of the Oregon ranch and returned to Los Angeles and his movie colony friends but, after working steadily from 1913 to 1946, never appeared in another movie.” – wikipedia

“The Pallette Ranch is a historic dude ranch on the upper Imnaha River. 302 acres with about 1.3 miles of river flowing through, merchantable timber, pasture, creeks and orchard. The property is surrounded by National Forest on three sides. Many structures including the old Butler homestead (1890’s log cabin), main residence, guest house, a bunkhouse with mess hall and five rooms, barn with four stalls & tack room, 30×80 shop, ice house, gas station and warehouse. Lots of wildlife; deer, elk, bear, cougar, wild turkey and great fishing … $795,000 …” – Wallowa Mountain Properties … great photos! … Update: 7-2-2015 … Ranch still for sale … Price lowered to $695,000

Rolling Stone

fredstone_1945_rollingstone_dustjacketSaturday, May 10, 2014, 9:30 pm —
Aargh! A cold … I’ve got a koad … Started with a sore throat Friday afternoon … Stayed late at work, left after 6:00 pm … Lots of Simply Orange high-pulp orange juice … and a few remaining Cold-Eeze sugar free cherry flavor zinc lozenges … Can’t take them together … And leftover Vancouver Pizza pepperoni pizza (best in town!) … And aspirin.

“When you’re sick, rest is best, rest is best!”Daniel Gets a Cold, Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood – good advice from PBS tv!

So that’s what I’m doing … restin’ and readin’ … Fred Stone’s autobiography, Rolling Stone, 1945 … interlibrary loan via Summit from U. of Oregon, Eugene … Checked out 4 times in 1945 … still has the original signed checkout cards in the back pocket! … Love this archaeological connection with the book’s past.

No Stone Unturned

Sunday, May 4, 2014, 8:50 am — Just finished The Trail of the Lonesome Pine, 1936 … first feature film shot in Technicolor outdoors. Pristine color (recently purchased the DVD). Henry Fonda‘s fourth film. Beulah BondiAbove and beyond all that goodness, I HAD to find out more about Fred Stone (Judd Tolliver, head of the Tolliver clan) …
trail_lonesome_pine_1936_fonda_fredstone
Who is he, who is he, who is he?Katharine Hepburn‘s beleagured father in Alice Adams, 1935 … His first of 11 sound films. His last, The Westerner, 1940.

Hot on the keyboard in pursuit of Fred Stone, 1873-1959, from my old standby, imdb.com:

fredstone_1917_inscribedphoto“Hardly remembered today, if at all, Fred Stone was once one of the most multi-faceted circus performers to hit turn-of-the century America. There seemed to be nothing he couldn’t do–tightrope walking, acrobatics, clowning . . . you name it. This initial celebrity eventually led to his stellar headlining in vaudeville houses, stardom on the Broadway musical stage and character lead work in films.

Became famous as the Scarecrow in the 1902-1906 stage production of The Wizard of Oz, paired with David Craig Montgomery who played the Tin Woodsman. His performance inspired Ray Bolger, who based his performance on Stone’s incredible physical performances.”

A very close friend of humorist Will Rogers … Fred and Rogers would sometimes appear on the same vaudeville bill and shared a mutual love of steer roping, polo, flying and even bulldogging. One of Will’s children was named Fred Stone Rogers.

fredstone_scarecrow_wizardofoz_side“Uncle of Gunsmoke (1955) actor Milburn Stone (“Doc” Adams).”

A long-overdue biography of Fred Stone was published by Armond Fields in 2002″ … Just requested it via Summit! … Fred Stone: Circus Performer and Musical Comedy Star … Also, his autobiography, Rolling Stone, 1945.

That’s it! … He has a Scarecrow-esque quality of earnest yearning, to know more, be more, held back by a slight befuddlement (that word will have to do until I find the right one).
