Ivor Novello

Sunday, November 30, 2014, 1:00 pm — Dark. Welsh. Wonderful … Ivor Novello (1893-1951) … Through the wacky wonders of Google, I searched “Shirley Booth husband” (Bill Baker) … and Ivor appeared … Her wishful thinking husband? … Did she sing one of his songs? Appear in a play? … In any case, thanks Shirley! … Ivor’s name has popped up in my readings of all things British … WWI, theatre, movies, biographies, etc. … but I never took the time to discover who he really was … Now’s the time!

Summertime – 1955

Jan. 17, 2010 — THE ultimate “wish I were there” film, David Lean’s Summertime, 1955.   Every shimmering molecule on the screen is an immersion into Venice, Italy, where it was filmed.

This Italian poster IS the exquisite essence of Summertime … Rossano Brazzi, Katharine Hepburn …

Summertime is based on the 1952-1953 Broadway production, The Time of the Cuckoo, by Arthur Laurents, starring Shirley Booth (1953 Tony winner) and Dino DiLuca.

“The cuckoo is a summer visitant to the whole of Europe. It proclaims its arrival by a cry, heralding the season of love.” — Encyclopedia Britannica
